The short version

  1. 01AI Max turns keywords into suggestions, so check search terms weekly and lock down landing pages.
  2. 02Send qualified leads and closed sales back to Google and Meta, not just form fills.
  3. 03Many genuinely different creative concepts each month beat one polished hero video per quarter.

Most paid media trend lists are feature announcements in disguise. The real question for 2027 is how much of your ad account you still control, and where your ads even show up.

Here's what's actually happening, with dates, and what to do about each one. No predictions dressed up as facts.

Keywords are becoming suggestions

Google launched AI Max for Search campaigns in beta in May 2025 and moved it out of beta in April 2026. It uses your landing pages, your ads and real-time signals to match searches you never listed as keywords, and it rewrites headlines to fit each query.

Google also said it would automatically move Dynamic Search Ads, automatically created assets and the campaign-level broad match setting into AI Max during September 2026. If you had any of those switched on, your account has already changed, whether or not anyone told you.

Google claims advertisers using the full AI Max feature set see 7% more conversions or conversion value on average. That's Google's number about Google's product, so treat it as a hypothesis to test, not a promise.

What to do: open your search terms report every week. Add negatives aggressively, use the brand and location controls, and lock down any landing pages you don't want the system writing ads from. Then look hard at your website, because AI Max reads it.

Ads are moving inside the answers

Search results don't look like ten blue links anymore, and ads are following people into the AI-generated parts.

In May 2025 Google expanded ads in AI Overviews to desktop in the US and started testing ads in AI Mode, its chat-style search. Google said Performance Max, Shopping and broad match Search campaigns (including AI Max) are eligible. At Google Marketing Live in May 2026 it showed new AI Mode ad formats labeled Sponsored, with Shopping ads and a lead-focused business agent described as coming in the following months.

Then there's ChatGPT. OpenAI started selling ads in its free tier and said on August 31, 2026 that the business passed a $1 billion annualized run rate in under 200 days, with tens of thousands of advertisers. Ads are available in more than 40 countries through OpenAI's sales team and partners, and self-serve buying through its Ads Manager opened that day in India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. OpenAI says ads are labeled, kept separate from answers and don't change what ChatGPT says.

What to do: don't move budget yet just because it's new. Do make sure your campaigns are eligible for AI surfaces where it makes sense, and if you sell to consumers in a market where ChatGPT self-serve is live, run a small, capped test with clean conversion tracking. Small and early beats big and late.

The machine is going to find the searches. Your job is to give it a website worth sending people to.

First-party data is the new targeting

Every platform is leaning harder on automation, and automation only learns from what you feed it. If the only signal you send is "someone visited the thank-you page," the system will optimize for people who fill out forms, including the ones who never pick up the phone.

Meta tightened its attribution in 2026, counting only real link clicks as click-through conversions. That makes server-side tracking (the Meta Conversions API, Google's enhanced conversions, offline conversion imports from your CRM) the difference between a campaign that learns and one that guesses. OpenAI's ad platform now supports a pixel and Conversions API too, which tells you where the whole industry is going.

What to do: send qualified leads and closed sales back to Google and Meta, not just form fills. If your CRM can't do that, fixing it is worth more than any new campaign type on this list.

Creative volume beats creative polish

Meta's delivery system now uses the ad itself to decide who sees it, and Meta has said creative diversification is the best lever advertisers have. Advantage+ Sales campaigns allow up to 50 ads per ad set. Google is building more generative creative tools into its ad platform too.

The result: one beautiful hero video per quarter doesn't cut it. Accounts that win ship many different concepts (different hooks, different faces, different formats) and retire the losers fast.

What to do: set a monthly creative quota you can actually hit. Four genuinely different concepts a month from a phone and a decent script will usually beat one expensive shoot. Use AI tools for variations and resizing, and keep humans on the ideas.

Creative polish

A beautiful hero video
An expensive shoot
Keep the hero running

Creative volume

Many genuinely different concepts
A phone and a decent script
Retire the losers fast

What we'd do in the first quarter of 2027

Audit what Google auto-migrated in September. Fix conversion tracking so it reports revenue or qualified leads. Build a creative calendar. Pick one new surface to test with a budget you can afford to lose. Then stop reading trend posts (this one included) and look at your search terms report.

If you want a second set of eyes on your account or the site behind it, our SEO & Organic Growth and Websites teams work on exactly this. Paid and organic are reading the same website now. Build it once, properly.
