The short version
- 01Meta ads still work, but cheap is over and automation has replaced hand-picked interest targeting.
- 02Creative is the targeting now, so you need genuinely different ads, not five versions of one ad.
- 03Check Meta's reported results against your real sales, and believe the store when they disagree.
Most small businesses that say Meta ads don't work are running them the way the platform used to work: tight interest targeting, one image, a boosted post and a hopeful budget.
Meta ads still work. Meta reported 3.60 billion people using at least one of its apps every day in June 2026, so your customers are there. But in the same quarter Meta said the average price per ad rose 12% year over year. Cheap is over. And hand-picked interest targeting has been mostly swallowed by automation.
So the honest answer is: Meta ads are worth it for a specific kind of business, run a specific way. Here's how to tell if that's you.
What actually changed
Three things matter for a small or midsize business owner.
First, Advantage+ is the default way to buy. Meta folded its old Advantage+ Shopping campaigns into Advantage+ Sales, added Advantage+ for app and lead campaigns, and turned on automated audience, placement and budget settings by default. You can still set hard limits like location, minimum age and excluded customer lists. Most of what you used to call targeting (interests, gender, max age) is now a suggestion the system may ignore.
Second, the delivery system got a new brain. Meta calls its ad retrieval system Andromeda, and in 2025 Meta said creative diversification is now the best lever for reaching the right people. Translation: the algorithm reads your ad to figure out who it's for.
Third, the numbers you see got stricter. In 2026 Meta narrowed click-through attribution to actual link clicks, moved likes and other engagement into a separate engage-through setting, and dropped the 28-day click window as an optimization option. If your reported results dipped this year and your sales didn't, that's probably why.
Creative is the targeting now
This is the part most small advertisers miss. They upload one polished image, three slightly different headlines, and wonder why results stall.
If Meta uses your creative to find buyers, then five versions of the same ad all find the same buyer. You need ads that are genuinely different: different people on camera, different problems solved, different formats. A 20-second founder video talking about price. A customer showing the product in her kitchen. A static image with a blunt offer. Each one is a different door into a different audience.
You don't need a studio for this. Phone video shot in good light, with captions, routinely beats glossy brand work in feeds. What you do need is a habit of producing new concepts every few weeks, because the winners wear out.
