One of the true joys of starting a new company is learning all of the new technical jargon that you didn’t know before. Yes, we are being sarcastic. When you begin a new business there are far too many complicated terms to learn, especially if your business is online (which it should be). One of those terms that you should be familiar with? PPC or Pay-Per-Click. What is PPC and how can it assist your company? We here at Avant8 in Utah have the goods to help you begin a PPC journey. In this article we will help define what PPC is, how it may assist your company to succeed, and perhaps some cheeky advertising of our own company. But let’s begin with some definitions so that we’re all on the same page.
PPC: Pay-Per-Click
Do you have an Instagram account? If so, this may help you understand (or at least it helped me) what PPC is. You know when an account has a lot of followers, but has only been an account for a few days? Well, those are likely followers that have been paid for. This is sort of how PPC works. PPC or Pay-Per-Click is an advertising model that drives traffic to websites or social media accounts. When a person types something into a search engine, let’s say Google, ads pop-up on the front page, right? Those are ads that are PPC. Each time a person clicks on those ads, advertisers will pay. This is one of the quickest ways to revenue.
How does PPC help businesses?
It’s quite simple, actually, if you are on the first page of Google, you are most likely to be chosen. The more clicks the more sales. We like to think of PPC as an auction, the highest bid gets the really neat vintage guitar (the reward, you get it). The more people that end up on your website the more customers you’ll have and therefore the more sales/traffic you’ll have. This is important when first beginning a business because no one will be searching for your particular business, unless it’s your Mom trying to show her friends how accomplished you are. Sometimes you need that boost in order to get your business off the ground. Just like that Instagram account with those paid followers, you’re more likely to hit that follow button if they already look Instagram famous, right?

Do-it-yourself
Perhaps you are a DIY type of person. We get it! After you give it a try, maybe you’ll come back to us. But, in the meantime, here are some tips to help you get through your first PPC launch:
- Before you begin your PPC launch, you need to know a few things. Like, what your customers want, how they are looking for it and what they are looking for. This is brainstorming time. You need to get into the mind of your audience. What would they be typing into the search engine? If you upload what you think your customers are using, your launch may be a big loss. You must research phrases and keywords that your ideal customer is looking for. After you’ve got your keyword/phrase list, you should use different keyword tools to check if the demand for these particular words are high or low. This way you can ensure that the keywords are in good shape to be pushed forward in your launch.
- Understand your budget. This is important because you don’t want to overspend on a launch that is not profitable. You should create a budget to help you decide what your max cost for a keyword for pay-per-click to ensure that you aren’t going over the max.
- Like most companies, there will be competition. How do you combat that? By investigating time. Doing a bit of research on your competitors is always a positive. There is a lot that you can learn from investigating their PPC campaigns. There are competitors that may sell similar products to you and there are even competitors that don’t sell the same product or service but use the same keywords/phrases. You want to stand out from the crowd but stay in line with your competition.
There is a lot that goes into PPC, so these are just a few tips of how to get started if you are a DIY type of business owner.
